A Day in the Life of a Carmelite…

4:30a.m. Silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.

5:30a.m. The Minor Hours of  the Divine Office which are in Latin. The Nuns use the ancient Carmelite Rite, which St. Teresa also prayed.

7:00a.m. The Nuns don their white mantles to prepare for the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

8:00a.m. Each Sister works in solitude, in a spirit of prayer and recollection. Work is done under obedience with a willing and joyful heart.

10:40a.m. The large bell rings calling the Sisters to choir for a visit to the Blessed Sacrament to pray the Litany of Our Lady and for an examination of conscience.

11:00a.m. The monastic meals take place in silence while a Sister reads from Holy Scripture or other spiritual books.

12:00p.m. At this hour the Nuns gather together in the recreation room as a family. As they work in common, it is a time of much joy and laughter.

1:00pm.  Retirement in the cell.

2:30p.m.  The Nuns gather again in the Choir to pray Vespers and for Spiritual Reading.

3:30p.m. Time for work, sewing, farm work, and cooking, wherever God calls. Novices gather for spiritual instruction given by the Novice Mistress.

5:00p.m.  Quiet prayer.

6:00p.m. A light evening meal, followed by another hour of Recreation.

7:30p.m. Compline is prayed followed by the Rosary. Grand Silence then begins, lasting until Prime the following day. Matins and Lauds begin at 9:00pm.

10:00p.m.  The Carmelite retires, grateful for all the graces received throughout the day.
